My parents divorced when I was six years old, so I didn’t have the blessing of growing up in a home with the example of a godly marriage. And to be honest, most of the marriages I witnessed around me were “less than stellar.”
(Have you ever seen marriages in which the couple has been married for years and years, yet they don’t even like each other? They just stay together for the sake of the kids, or for the money, or to “save face.” I can’t understand that.)
Yet, growing up, one of the deepest longings of my heart was to have a beautiful, thriving marriage. I wanted to have a husband who not only loved the Lord with all his heart, but who would also love me more than anyone else in the world. I wanted him to be my closest friend and confidant. I wanted to not only love him, but like him. I wanted to have fun with him and enjoy being with him!
So, as a teenager, I would pray about the man I would someday marry. I asked the Lord for His best. And while I waited, I prepared my own heart to become a wife. I read what the New Testament scriptures taught concerning having a godly marriage and would meditate on certain scriptures over and over.
In 1989, while attending Bible college, I met my future husband. We were married in August of 1990. This year we will celebrate our 24th wedding anniversary. I can honestly say that our marriage gets better and better every year, our love for each other grows stronger and richer every year, and we still laugh with one another and enjoy each other’s company. My husband is my dearest and best friend!
I don’t claim to be a marriage expert, nor do I claim that our marriage is always perfect – we’ve had our challenges and our petty disagreements. But I thank God for His goodness and faithfulness to us. He has always been right in the center of our marriage, leading us, guiding us, correcting us, providing for us, but mostly loving us! He is so faithful!
I’ve added some pages for you to explore that I hope will encourage you, help you, instruct you, and inspire you to make your marriage flourish!
