I love the first of the year! To me, there’s nothing like the fresh feeling and the promise of a new beginning that a new year brings. The old year is gone—a brand new year with limitless possibilities awaits!
A new year is always a great place to start afresh in any area of your life that needs to be changed. Even now, you may be planning on changing the way you eat and starting an exercise regimen. Or, you may have decided to become a more organized person. You may be intending on spending less money and supercharging your debt-free strategy. These are all wonderful goals and aspirations, but they will not help your spirit to prosper.
Philippians 3:10 (Amp.) says, “[For my determined purpose is] that I may know Him [that I may progressively become more deeply and intimately acquainted with Him, perceiving and recognizing and understanding the wonders of His Person more strongly and more clearly]…”
The greatest thing you can do this year to change your life for the better is to get to know the Lord more deeply and more intimately than ever before. And the only way to get to know Him is through His Word and through fellowshipping with Him in prayer.
Give His Word first place in your life. If you’re not in the daily habit of reading the Bible, then start small. Make a goal to read at least one chapter a day. When this becomes a habit, increase your reading to two or three (or ten) chapters a day. But don’t just speed-read your way through the Word just to get it done. Read the Bible as if it were God speaking directly to you—because it is! Allow Him to deal with certain areas of your life that need to be changed. Then make the necessary adjustments.
Another daily habit you should develop is fellowshipping with the Lord through prayer. Again, if you’ve never made this a habit, then start small. If you need to, get up half an hour earlier to pray. Pray in the shower. Pray on your commute to and from work. Pray as you clean the house. Pray as you walk the dog. Create a lifestyle of talking to the Lord and listening to Him speak to your heart. Do what it takes to get to know Him more.
If you make it your determined purpose to know Him this year—better than you ever have—you will receive the power you need to accomplish all of your other goals. And 2013 will be a blessed and prosperous year. You will look back on it and find that the goodness of God and the sweetness of His presence permeated your everyday life, and you will be on a much higher plane than you have ever been before!
