Wonder Woman Syndrome – most of us homeschooling moms have it. We think we can do it all, and quite often we try to do too much. Many of us are educating several children in multiple grade levels, while trying to juggle an at-home business (or outside-the-home job), helping our husbands in ministry, keeping an immaculate home (Nah, me neither!) – not to mention trying to find some time to do all those Pinterest projects we’ve pinned.
It’s just the way we women are! We are multi-taskers, wearers of many hats, spinners of countless plates. But sometimes, it’s just refreshing to have help in these areas.
Take this past school year, for instance. My daughter, Olivia, was a high school senior with ambitions of pursuing an English degree at our local university, and eventually becoming a writer. As the time rapidly approached, I wanted to make sure she was prepared for college writing and composition.
As I was looking into various writing programs, I heard about Essay Rock Star by Fortuigence. I jumped at the chance to have a professional teach both Olivia, and my 15-year old son, Alec. This multi-tasking mama was more than ready to hand over the reigns in this subject!
Online Writing Course
Essay Rock Star, created by Lily Iatridis, is an online writing course specifically designed to give teenagers the necessary skills for success after graduation. (She even offers a free online course for parents.) The curriculum teaches students four types of essays, which are often requested on college applications, entrance exams and for various other purposes. These essays include:
- A Personal Statement
- A Persuasive Essay
- An Expository Essay
- A Textual Analysis
Each assignment is broken down into 5 steps. The student logs into the course, watches a video pertaining to the lesson, and then can either read the instructions for the lesson or have them read to him or her. There are many resources available in PDF format for the student to access.
After completing the assignment, the student submits it to the instructor for review. A day or so later, they will receive their feedback – and Lily is very generous, encouraging and helpful with her feedback. The student will then edit and refine anything that needs to be fixed and re-submit it to the instructor.
Olivia, my budding authoress, seemed to breeze through the course essays. Even though she was already a strong writer, she still needed to learn some formal writing practices. This course helped hone her writing skills, and Lily’s feedback and high praise spurred her own through the process.
Alec, my reluctant writer, was a different story. Each day for several months he sat in front of the computer supposedly working on his essays. Because I was determined to take a “hands off” approach with this course, I would ask him how he was doing and if he needed help, to which he would reply he was “fine.” So, I went on with whatever I was working on.
Apparently, he didn’t understand some things from the very beginning, and rather than asking for help, he thought he would just plod through the course until he was miraculously freed him from his bonds!
Thankfully, Lily intervened by emailing me and asking to schedule a phone call with Alec. After sitting down with him and looking over his work, showing him where he was erring, and helping him to understand exactly what he needed to do, we got him back on course. I greatly appreciate the fact that Lily brought this to my attention.
Lesson learned (ahem).
