Let me tell you a bit about my son, Alec.
First of all, he is my middle child, sandwiched between two over-achievers. Now, don’t get me wrong, he’s just as intelligent as his brother and sister, but he just doesn’t like to put forth any extra effort. I mean, this is the kid who refused to walk until he was 17 months old!
My other two children have always been super-easy to homeschool – they love to learn, love to think, love to be challenged. And if I’d only had the two of them to educate, then I would have thought I was the greatest homeschool mom ever! (Ha!)
But it has always taken a LOT of prodding to get Alec to stay focused on his lessons since he isn’t overly fond of school. He’d much rather play his bass or keyboard, Xbox, mow the lawn – anything other than schoolwork.
He is also extremely strong-willed. I have lost my cool with him on many occasions. In fact, I have totally threatened to put him in public school several times – and once, I even came close to meaning it. (I’m sure you have never been that exasperated!)
As homeschooling moms, I believe a lot of us tend to second-guess ourselves and wonder if we’re doing what is best for each individual child. After all, no two kids are the same. Each one has his or her own learning style.
Over the years of homeschooling Alec, I’ve had to learn to think out of the box. So when I heard about a brand new company called Dual Credit at Home, I was quite intrigued and curious as to whether it would work for him.
What is Dual Credit at Home?
Dual Credit at Home is a 49-week study program designed to help homeschool students earn both high school and college credit. This is accomplished by study plans that guide the student through 13 different college-level exams, which directly coincide with high school core curriculum.
Upon enrollment, your student will receive a “Getting Started Kit” which includes a HUGE 3-ring binder, an exam calendar, labeled dividers and tabs for Weeks 1 through 49, as well as the book, Biblically Handling Technology and Social Media for your teen to read, and Passionate Parenting: Enjoying the Journey of Parenting Teens, by Cary Schmidt for you.
Every Monday the student will receive that week’s study plan delivered directly to his or her inbox. Each plan includes the week’s overview, a comprehensive daily study plan, plus, an “Extra Mile” assignment guide for Bible study, current events and more.

The study plans include utilizing another online program, Speedy Prep, which offers “flash card” testing to help students practice and prepare.
Upon completion of each subject, the student can then take a CLEP (College Level Examination Program) exam at a local testing center for about $80. If the student passes the exam, they earn college credit for that subject.
Dual Credit at Home offers the opportunity to earn 57 college credits!!
Owner, Becky Muldrow, has used this method with her own children. She says:
“This program has been very successful in our own family. Two of my kids entered law school at ages 17 and 19 (one graduated with honors; one is currently in her 2nd year at UT)… You don’t have to be super intelligent to do this — just disciplined and on a plan!”

Our Experience with Dual Credit for Home School
So, how did my strong-willed, sometimes-unmotivated-and-often-disinterested-in-school son do with Dual Credit at Home?
Well, after learning about Becky’s children obtaining their college degrees at a young age, a fire was lit in him to really focus his efforts and earn college credit for himself. (It also helped that the first course was U.S. History I because he loves early American History.)
There were some snags the first couple of weeks with him getting used to a different studying technique. The study course involves a lot of reading (you purchase your own text books) which was a challenge for him. And the first practice test he took, he really didn’t do so well.
So he went back over some of the lessons and studied a lot more. Just this last week, he took all three practice tests and aced them, making a 91%, 93% and 98%, respectively. He hasn’t taken the official CLEP test, but we will be scheduling it ASAP. The.Boy.Is.Motivated.
And I hear the angels singing!
We’ve reached the end of our school year, but are planning on continuing with Dual Credit when school starts back this fall. Why miss out on such an awesome opportunity to earn college credit?
Furthermore, I am strongly considering enrolling my 12-year old son. I believe he would really flourish with this study plan. (PLEASE NOTE: Students have to be 13 years old to purchase a CLEP exam.)
Benefits of Enrolling in Dual Credit at Home
Besides from the obvious benefit of “killing two birds with one stone,” there are several other benefits:
- Save up to two years of life by earning college credit (and close to an Associate’s Degree) during high school
- Save money and avoid ever-increasing college tuition costs by “CLEPing” out of basic college classes
- No need to relocate or endure the hassle and stress of commuting back and forth to a local college each day
- Continue to enjoy the freedom of home education — even through college years
- Earn a degree and step into chosen vocation more quickly
If you have teens that are interested in getting a jump start on their college degree, then I strongly encourage you to enroll them in this amazing program.
The regular price has recently been reduced to $1096 (from $1295) for the entire 49 weeks!!! If you feel this would be a good fit for your family and decide to make the purchase, please be sure to enter the code FLOURISH in the “referred by” field at checkout.
You will receive so much value for your investment. The best part about this is that you can use the study plans over and over again for all your children at no extra cost!
